Rovaniemi sits a few kilometres south of the Arctic Circle line, which puts it under the auroral oval on most active nights. It also has streetlights, a floodlit river bridge and a Santa Claus Village that glows from a kilometre away. Light pollution does not hide a strong display, but it swallows the faint arc that sits on the northern horizon for hours before anything starts to move.
So the first hour of every tour is a drive. Guides head 20 to 100 km out to lake shores, forest roads and open bogs where nothing competes with the sky. Where they go depends on the cloud map that afternoon, not on a fixed itinerary, and no honest operator will tell you the destination when you book.
You can see the aurora from the city on a big night. Locals photograph it from the Jätkänkynttilä bridge. Planning your one trip around that chance is a different matter, and it is the reason the hunts exist.
